Egypt Political System takes place in the framework of a presidential republic, whereby the President of Egypt is head of state.
Executive power is exercised by the government.
Legislative power is vested in both the government and the two chambers of parliament, the People’s Assembly and the Shura Council.
Egypt introduced to the world one of the oldest political and administrative systems, when the first central state was established at the banks of the Nile.
In modern times, the world has derived from Egypt political system, the institutions and modern administrative as well as the formulas of constitution, parliament, responsible government and judicial authority since the 19th century.
Today, Egypt lives a new phase of political and democratic development aiming at more deepening of democratic practice, enhancing freedoms and laying down the state of law, institutions and respect of human rights.
Egypt political system introduced the Parliamentary democracy since 1824 and the world has derived from Egypt the institutions and modern administrative systems as well as the formulas of the Constitution, and judicial authority.
Egypt issued the first constitution in 1882 and after canceling the British protectorate in 1922, Egypt issued the second constitution in 1923.
The Constitution of the Arab Republic of Egypt issued on September 11, 1971 and amended on May 22, 1980, May 25, 2005 and March, 2007 regulates the political system of the State and the specifications of the public authorities.
The Constitution states that Arabic is the official language and principles of Islamic law (Shari'a) are the principal source of legislation.
The Arab Republic of Egypt is a democratic state based on citizenship as stipulated in Article (1).
The Egyptian people are part of the Arab nation and work for the realization of its comprehensive unity.
